Mac doesn't seem to have a notification mechansim for outdated programs, or at least one the the die-hard Mac user I was working with was aware of. The Mac Cannot Connect To The Windows-based Computer They should know how to do this? For the Ubuntu servers I just use ssh of course, but for Windows Servers you need to use a Remote Desktop Connection client.
I logged in my RDP servers and switched the RDP connection to only use RDP security.

Lombard talks about setting up various properties, and changing the "Allow remote connections" settings, and such. The original app that came with my microsoft install on Mac with Disk and Antenna icon didn't.
