I'm going to try to boot up in Safe Mode. Probably worth taking an hour or 2 and running memtest (from bootable cd). The common denominator for me was the all the pc's with issues had LG electronics cd,cd/rw,and dvd roms in them which for some reason cannot read the cd sent from MS. Windows 10 will need certain drivers for USB etc, but the motherboard will have to be fairly modern for it to work fully. read review
I never screw around with a balky drive, I just throw it away, and stuff in a new one. Success. TechSpot is a registered trademark. Installing Ubuntu will overwrite Windows on your 'C' drive, so it's worth trying as it's free, and only takes 20 minutes to do.

Well this is when it always crashes. Unfortunately, the setup disk did not give an 'upgrade' choice - it attempted a fresh OS install, destroying all my updated drivers, and system checkpoints in the process. Hopefully it is SP3 otherwise you are already looking at lots of more problems, like a 1.5Gb download of SP3 Please let us know how you get on. I have three copies of XP, I tested them on another system and they install fine so that rules out a corrupt disk. Do you have another Windows XP CD you could try?
